Books that have Transformed my Home Education Mindset

Empowering Your Home Education Journey: Must-Read Books for Every Educator

Reshaping one's mindset forms the foundation of home education. Those educated in traditional UK schools may find their beliefs and self-judgments deeply connected to their schooling experiences. I believe substantial personal development work is necessary to fully embrace homeschooling's potential, and here are several transformative reads that have helped me along the way.

1. Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Though not specifically about home education, this book explores personal growth and self-discovery. Doyle's examination of shedding societal expectations aligns with homeschooling philosophy, encouraging authentic living and empowering children to pursue their genuine selves.

2. Weapons of Mass Instruction by John Taylor Gatto

Gatto, a former respected teacher, critiques traditional schooling systems for stifling creativity and critical thinking. He advocates for personalized, liberated education that allows students to pursue their interests - a central rationale for choosing homeschooling.

3. Out of Our Minds by Sir Ken Robinson

Robinson emphasizes fostering creativity in education, challenging conventional systems. He champions valuing diverse talents and innovative thinking, inspiring environments supporting individual learning journeys.

4. Divergent Minds by Jenara Nerenberg

This exploration of neurodiversity examines unique strengths and challenges of differently-wired individuals. Particularly impactful for parents of neurodivergent children, it offers strategies for supporting varied needs.

5. Unschool Yourself First by Mark Beaumont

Beaumont encourages embracing flexible, child-led approaches prioritizing curiosity and self-directed learning, reinforcing confidence in children's innate learning abilities.

6. Neurosensory Divergence: Autistic Languages by Helen Daniels

Daniels explores how autistic individuals perceive and communicate uniquely. Understanding sensory experiences helps educators create inclusive environments supporting all learners' development and parents' wellbeing.

I am a homeschooling parent of two with ADHD who coaches parents on transforming their home education journey. I believe deeply in personal joy, maintaining boundaries, pursuing individual hobbies, and abandoning limiting beliefs causing burnout.
